Sound Design, Graphics, Video Post Services for "Wild Horse, Wild Ride" Documentary Film
January 2011
Resolution Digital Studios recently completed work on a film titled, "Wild Horse, Wild Ride". The feature documentary, a moving and powerful film about wild mustangs, and the men and women who train them, was co-directed by Alex Dawson and Greg Gricus. The film, also produced by Dawson, made its debut this month in a world premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
At the heart of the film is the annual Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge in Fort Worth, TX in which 100 trainers (both professionals and amateurs) each set out to train a totally wild mustang in just 100 days. The trainers then show their horses in competition before putting the animals up for public auction.
Resolution was delighted to be involved in Dawson and Gricus' brilliantly crafted story. Natural sound was intrinsic to expressing the experience of being around the Mustangs and editor, Jude Leak, was meticulous in her work to make sure that every hoof, the leather of each saddle, and even the breath of the horses could be heard.
To fulfill that vision, Resolution's postproduction team stepped in. Bryen Hensley and Steve Maslan provided post sound services. Maslan handled all of the sound effects, adding backgrounds and cut effects. Hensley did all dialog editing and premixing, along with the final theatrical mix for the film's festival run. Resolution's Scott Sutter conformed the film, and Dustin Foster handled all color correction, staying true to Gricus' breathtaking photography. Graphic artist, Liz Zielke, designed the titles, supers, as well as poster art using a simple yet elegant approach that achieved an understated cowboy/western feeling.
The resulting film is described by the Palm Springs festival as, "Deftly balancing the story of a half dozen trainers and their mustangs in locations ranging from the Navajo nation to the Texas range to the rolling hills of New Hampshire, the filmmakers take us from the first uneasy meeting between the trainers and their horses up through the Ft. Worth competition. What starts as a cautious and suspicious relationship evolves into a powerful bond as tight as any love affair. Crafting a portrait of a seemingly bygone America, Alex and Greg highlight a country where the pastoral beauty of the landscape is nearly matched by the compassion of the people who inhabit it. Enjoy the ride."
